The American West Coast seems to have really taken to U.K. dubstep–Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have developed devoted audiences for the stripped-down low-end sound that some initially surmised would be just a British thing. And helping U.S. dubstep make its mark, one bass-heavy burner at a time, is Jon A.D.’s LoDubs label.

LoDubs is not your ordinary dance music imprint, nor is Jon A.D. a young upstart. The label is run from inside Anthem Records, a record store (and label of the same name) that Jon owns, and which specializes in limited-edition metal, noise, and drone releases. This may seem contradictory, but Jon sees a strong connection between metal, noise, and dubstep. “Dubstep is so much about drum structures. And when you increase the air and rhythm in tracks, that allows drone and other frequencies to come out. Scorn’s stuff is very metal, and Burial and Boxcutter have some of those elements as well.”

The history of Jon AD reads a bit like a peoples history of innovative electronic music in the the United States. Born in Eugene, Oregon, and from a young age attracted to all aspects of sound, it was in his teens that he first discovered Electronic music, and realized that it had as visceral of elements as Punk Rock when combined with heavy amplification.

This thread ultimately lead to, and followed the beginnings of the Hardcore Techno sound of artists like Mescalinum United and GTO, and the advent of UK breakbeat hardcore like Spiral Tribe, Suburban Base/Moving Shadow/etc. As there where no record stores that even began to come close to following such musical movements, he founded the first DJ service in the region for such sounds, delivered via bicycle, much like Horsemouth in Rockers (a parallel not drawn until he saw the film many years later).

As it appeared much of the west coast was years away from an appreciation of such styles, by the time 1995 rolled along, Jon AD found himself seeing the Midwest, with its all-encompassing party scene, and its indigenous culture which was the beginnings of the Midwest hardcore sound, as a voice calling. So when a promoter heard him DJ in Oregon, and on the spot offered him a plane ticket and some money to come play a party in a rural barn near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he departed, and thus embarked on a three year “trip” which besides an endless amount of parties played also involved a long running residency at the primary club in the city, Matisse, and a featured writing position on the magazine known as Massive (massivemag.com), which is still seen as the Rosetta stone of the period, and the primary source of recorded history for such organizations as Drop Bass/Communique/Addict Records/etc.

Shortly after arriving in the Midwest, the city of Chicago, and its indigenous music, became a primary driving force for Jon AD, and once relocating to San Francisco in 1998, and starting work at a music distributor, Jon AD founded the label losonofono, in an effort to illuminate many of these artists. In the height of the San Francisco house boom, this was in effect walking a separate path, which was compounded by the fact that many of the releases contained electro/techno/ghetto house tracks, which where all forms of music seen as not very cosmopolitan at the time. Throughout this period, Jon AD still had one foot firmly planted in Drum and Bass, playing many of the events in the region, and compiling the distro lists for the aforementioned distributor.

Coming full circle at the turn of the millennium, and returning to Oregon, Jon AD found himself in a similar situation as when he left, in that there was no way for him to procure the records he needed. Thus, Anthem Records, and brick and mortal record store/label was formed, and gradually the focus shifted in part to the Garage music sub strains emanating from around the world. From there, a chance meeting with a little known producer from Philly known as Starkey at a laptop battle set the stage from what came next, and thus hearing the track known as “Dementia” that night cemented what would become the first record on the Losonofono sub-label LoDubs.

Since that night in December 2006, LoDubs has emerged as among the strongest in a short list of labels representing bass driven music in the US, and arguably the only one largely representing artists from North and South America, with over 20 releases from artists as far north and Toronto and as far south as Venezuela, in addition to those from the UK, Germany, Japan, etc.

The future will see Jon AD and LoDubs continuing to blur the lines between what is one genre or the other, be it through the releases, The multi genre monthly founded by Jon AD, Monkeytek, and Ryan Organ in 2006 known as Various, and/or through his DJ sets.

CLUBROOT - Clubroot, LO DUBS

Fans of Burial, take note. Lo Dubs come correct this week with a hugely enticing and anticipated album from Clubroot. Clubroot has apparently been producing for the best part of the decade, initially constructing tech step D’n'B indebted to the likes of Nico, Ed Rush and Optical but shifting his palette to the dominant dubstep style in recent years. To sum up Clubroots sound as succinctly as possible, it’s like the perfect hybrid of Burial and Kryptic Minds, taking the mood driven atmospheres and quicksilver slink of Burial and alloying it to dynamic basslines and intricately produced rhythm structures. This combination is explored through ten tracks united by a singular rhythmic vision in thrall to classic darkside dance music and operating under the cover of severely occluded atmospheres. With Mary-Anne Hobbs fully on his case and forums across the interweb quickly catching onto his sound it’s not going to be long before he’s soundtracking every channel four ident so make sure to get in early! Essential recommendation for fans of Burial!!!

EBOLA / FACE A FACE - Galash (Ebola Mix), LO DUBS

Ebola joins the global bass party with four tracks on a Special Request ting for Lo Dubs. First up he revises female French rap duo Face A Face’s ‘Galash’ with lashings of whipcrack snares and dutty dubstep wobbles, while ‘Oh!!’ works with a cavernous halfstep riddim built for warehouse use. On the flipside We’d recommend cutting for the reconfigured Funky-meets-Wobblebass styles of ‘Kaiju’ if you’re into the likes of Raffertie or Si Begg.

Released: Apr 2009
Catalogue Number: LODUBS0901CD

STARKEY - Starkbass: A Continuous DJ Mix by Starkey, LO DUBS

Starkey packs out the second Lo Dubs mix CD with a rampant selection of UK and US synth ridden grime and dubstep styles in heavy style. Unusually for a mix CD, Starkey has given brief notes on each track selection in the case liner, citing his love for Drop The Lime and Joker and giving a little background on each track. The actual selection is a hyper coloured and ADD affected run of clacking snare driven and bass rubbed riddims including tracks from cardopusher, DZ, Drop The Lime, Kotchy, Syntonics, XI and Pacheko from the Lo Dubs label, mixed with some killer UK joints from Joker ‘Solid State’, Zomby ‘Aquafre5h’, and the huge Bok Bok bomb ‘No Need To Front 2009′ alongside more from Wonder, Geeneus and Stenchman. If you fancy getting synth-lazered and bass battered into submission in the comfort of your own home, car, shed or wherever this is probably the best way to do it. Ace!

DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Released: Sep 2009
Catalogue Number: LODUBS1209015

MENSAH - Sahara / Not A Shy Gyal, LO DUBS

Lo Dubs continue to balance out their dubstep rave inclinations with a deeper touch after lusher drops from ClubRoot and Syntonics. Mensah step up with the cinematically scoped ‘Sahara’, sounding to our ears like Steve Hitchell coating an Indigo or SYNKRO styled techy dubstep rhythm with his ambient fuzz. ‘Not A Shy Gyal’ on the flip toughens up after the fragility of the A-side with a Croydon debted standard, all dark, crushing and oppresive dubstep for the dancehall. For fans of Coki, 6Blocc or N-Type.

Hexstatic – Biography

Hexstatic are Stuart Warren-Hill and Robin Brunson, and together they have been consistently breaking new ground in Audio and Visual entertainment.

From their early work producing video’s for Coldcut and co-producing the seminal AV piece ‘Timber’, they then went on to sign to Ninjatune records and release the UK’s first fully audio visual album ‘Rewind’ in 2000.

Then followed the critically acclaimed ‘Listen and Learn’ mix for Ninja’s Solid Steel series in 2003 and CD/DVD release ‘Master View’ in 2004, another first with the accompanying DVD containing many 3D videos!

In 2006 they produced the Pick N Mix CD for Sanctuary records and in June 2007 released their 3rd studio album ‘When Robots Go Bad’. That and a cheeky host of bootlegs over the years under the Exactshit moniker.

Since their first tentative shows at early Big Chill events Hexstatic have become one of the worlds premier Audio Visual acts presenting spectacular shows around the globe containing their irreverant take on dance music with big injections of humour and good party times. They closed last years Big Chill with a celebration of the festival’s 15 years, a spectactualr performance that encompassed live Batucada and Capoeira and a special collaboration with beat box maestro Shlomo.

From dirty AV all-nighters at London’s 333 to the massive Electraglide shows in Tokyo. From Working Mens club launch parties in 3D to playing on a wall of water from the middle of the Thames, from illegal Guerilla gigs on the streets of London, Hexstatic have done it all.

2010 see’s several projects from Hexstatic, Stuart leading a foray into the world of 3D performance with his ‘Holotronica’ project and Robin producing a new AV show and release entitled ‘Trailer Trax’,.. a bass heavy dance floor journey into the world of cut up ‘Drive-In’ style movie trailers and intermissions.

The new label is essentially set up to release new Hexstatic projects we have coming this year and it means we have more control and more room to experiment. Ninja  are publishing and promoting it aswell. I’m also on the lookout for new talent and hopefully these first releases will help it grow into something that can support other work.

The album is kind of going back to what I’ve done best in the past really, back to basics beats and bass fuelled by video samples, much in the same way people have done with music. There is quite a lot of dubstep influence on there as it’s something I’d been listening to for a while but never made the real jump to produce or DJ until now, but I think the genre has become really inspiring of late and producers like Akira Kiteshi, Reso and George Lenton really pricked up my ears, along with that sort of L.A. Sound that’s going on at the moment,..it sounds really fresh and new,..much like the first time I heard Planet Rock. We had experimented with that kind of sound in the past with ‘Distorted Minds’ from Master View back in 2004 but never really took it further.

The album also has lots of other influences,..drum and bass, techno, early electro,..all the stuff that’s influenced me over the years and the music I’ve always DJ’d in my sets.

Gemmy

They don’t call Bristol the “second city of dubstep” for nothing. Its wealth of talented producers are currently pushing the boundaries of a genre that is rapidly developing in all sorts of directions, with Gemmel “Gemmy” Phillips leading the front line of its latest wave. Alongside his purple compadres Joker and Guido, the three are pushing a majestically colourful take on the sub-heavy sound of today, sculpting their own unique sound that marks them out from pretty much anyone in the scene.

Gemmy’s musical journey started with his love of hip-hop, before being taken aback by the inventiveness and pure dancefloor power of grime, UK garage and drum’n’bass. After picking up turntables and getting to grips with the kaleidoscope of sound being thrust onto his ears, Gemmy took the next natural step and started to create his own beats, refusing to be tied to any genre. Determined to carve out his own sonic niche, Gemmy began to mesh together the two great loves of his childhood—the swaggering G-funk beats of Dr. Dre, and the clean and colourful melodies of 16-bit console classics like Sonic The Hedgehog—with some additional low-end histrionics for maximum dance floor impact.

The burgeoning dubstep scene in his home city certainly had its influence, and keen to get his sound out to a wider audience, he began to give his tracks out to respected artists and DJs in the local community. The strength of his material certainly stood out, with dubplates of his tracks flying out of the local cutting emporium by eager DJs looking to destroy Bristol’s dance floors with his undeniably infectious and rabble rousing compositions. With its screeching lead synth and undulating bass riff, “Bk 2 The Future” emerged as both a crowd and selectors’ favourite, showing a producer who possessed the uncommon trait of knowing how to wobble with measure and restraint. After hearing the sub-low churn of his “Bass Transmitter” track, Punch Drunk boss Peverelist felt determined to sign both tracks to his label, with the 12-inch making a real splash on the international scene.

The success of the Punch Drunk release meant that Gemmy was quickly snatched up by Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas to join the new wave of dubstep-related artists that have become the vanguard of the label, with the “Supligen” and “Johnny 5” releases continuing Gemmy’s rich run of form.

Radio 1’s dubstep doyenne Mary Anne Hobbs has also taken the producer under her wing, signing up the delightfully wonky “Rainbow Road” to her Wild Angels compilation, further bolstering his already highly regarded position in the international bass music community.

Gemmy is currently working on his debut album for Planet Mu.

“What started out as a mix soon turned into a whole bunch of home-made mashes, set out in a series of chapters and separated by incidental random instrument stabs, plucks and coughs. There are only a few tunes on there that remain unadulterated.

So for the most part, unlikely combinations, accapellas and classical loops, not consecutive songs” Mr Zygadlo

rudi

Rudi Zygadlo is a musician like no other, taking the fundamentals of Dubstep in a direction that is as unexpected as it is unique, he’s created an amalgamation of pop song writing with Dubstep, rewired using influences as wide as Frank Zappa, Eastern European Classical music and contemporary US Indie, he’s tipped for great things in 2010.

He describes his music essentially as a fusion, a form of music he’s had in his head which has brought together his influences into a new format. The music he’s due to release in 2010 sounds effortless and completely natural. ‘Resealable Friendship’ is his debut single followed by his album ‘Great Western Laymen’ which comes out in May.

The single is about a Special Friendship he’s developed, the rest is open to interpretation, but the song reconditions pop music for Rudi’s purposes and musical vision.

Two of Planet Mu’s brightest stars have reinterpreted the song with their remixes, here, Starkey takes the song on a lonely journey into space and Slugabed puts in a mix where the voice drifts in and out of a stop start, rippling bass line and punchy drums.

The EP finishes off with the strange ‘The Udu and the Clave’, an instrumental that combines Zappa-like chromatics with juddering synths and wobbles.

Source: FACT Magazine The London-dwelling producer and live performer has earned himself a considerable cult following over the years, first turning heads with his distinctive 2006 debut LP, A Smile Is A Curve That Straightens Most Things – which combined influences from grime, dancehall, dubstep, with an all too rare dose of humour, heartbreak and humanity worked into the equation . The subsequent EPs, Hackney Centralist, Opera and Zamyatin Tapes Vols. 1 and 2, found him refining that mixture to increasingly potent effect, and February 15 sees the release of a new Bass Clef full-length, May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way, via the Blank Tapes label which has been his home since day one.

This mix is made up of tracks all written in the last year and shows the more frenetic side of my music. I’m from a Techno and Electro background (Real Electro NOT Electro House Bo!!ocks!) but dubstep has totally opened up another level of syncopation for me so I’m really enjoying the ryhthmic freedom i have, (I’m also a Drummer) and of course the cavernous low end as always….

Hope you like it. AL TOURETTES

AL TOURETTES - Dodgem / Sunken, APPLE PIPS

Deep tripping techy styles from Apple Pips with their second drop of the week. Al Tourettes hails from Bristol and follows in that rich heritage of electronically enhanced bass music, folowing the tech-stepping lineage from the Full Cycle crew or Tech Itch through to Peverelist and RSD with two intricately programmed and darkly tinted killers. ‘Dodgems’ on the A-side is more compatible for the dubstep crew with skittering 140bpm syncopations also belying an electro influence from the likes of Two Lone Swordsmen and Ae, while the flipside cuts into a tricky techno groove reminding of Kontext with a more driving intent. If you’ve checked any of Appleblim’s DJ sets recently you’ll have no doubt heard both these cuts rinsed out.

KONTEXT - Convex Curved Mirror, IMMERSE

Kontext’s double drop of twelves on Immerse last year sent ripples of excitement through lovers of the techy end of dubstep, picking up massive fans in the form of T++, Peverelist and Appleblim to champion his ultra hi-tech and futurist sound. From his base in St Petersburg, Stanislav Sevostyanikhin has welded another stark and austere dubstepXtechno statement of intent on ‘Curved Convex Mirror’, using a similar palette of elasticated electronics and drawing rhythmic inspiration from 2562/AMS in the well sculpted subbass and fluctuating garage-rhythmic syncopations, but also a streamlined and rolling edge taken from the more European techno style of icy Russian electronics. One aspect was clearly apparent from those first two 12″s, that Kontext is a master of creating tense and dramatic sonic vistas, with ‘Hometown Swamp’ he sets a darkened scene with atmospheres reminiscent of the finest Chain Reaction tracks from Fluxion or Vainqueur before bringing them up to date with a powerful garage infected pressure sounding like TRG jamming with Pole. If you picked up either of first two 12″s you’ve probably been waiting for this one, but if you’ve never heard of this guy, get to know! KILLER!!!

KONTEXT - Falling to Weightlessness, IMMERSE

Absolute killer 12″ alert! One of our favourite Bristol bassed labels Immerse have dug up a couple of complete shockers from a name soon to be very familiar to many dubstep and Techno heads, Kontext. This is the first material we’ve heard from this fella and it’s quite easily some of the finest gear we’ve clapped lugs on this year, fusing the much loved tech styles of T++ with some proper Bristol bass science for two tracks that have totally ripped the head off it. ‘Falling to weightlessness’ introduces himself with a devastatingly minimal riddim constructed from pure bass pressure punctuated with skittering off-kilter percussion akin to Torsten Profrock’s finest moments, while the spectral synthline and deep electronica vibes could be cut from an Autechre side project (well, in our dreams maybe?). ‘Aeromonarchs attacks’ on the flip cuts into a much deeper rhythm, flexing some scarily toned bass muscle with a honed dancefloor intent that will politely ask any shit dancers to kindly step off the floor please. This is without a doubt the best thing to have emerged from Immerse and quite possibly one of the finest 12″s you’ll hear all year. Listen!

KONTEXT - Plumes / Blinkende Stjerne, IMMERSE

If you’ve managed to pick yourself off the floor after ingesting the first 12″ from Kontext, sit yourself down for a second and check the styles on this badboy. Not content with mastering the art of 140bpm dubstepXtech on the first 12″, Kontext turns his hand to two brutally bass laden techno cuts for the second installment. ‘Plumes’ sits heavy on the A-side with a purest subbass driven tech-house cut speckled with lush synthwork, but it’s the flipside track ‘Blinkende Stjerne’ that really takes the piss, charging up another divebombing subbass mission with dry funked and brittle techno percussion before introducing awesome Monolake style atmospherics of the highest calibre. It’s safe to say this an absolute essential, and fans of everyone from Peverelist to Villalobos need to give this some very close attention. Recommended!!!
