‘Dub U’ aka ‘Selector Dub U’ is a San Jose, California based DJ that began in 1994, inspired by his love for dancing, as well as dance and experimental music. Within his first year of dj’ing he was opening for Detroit techno greats Claude Young and DBX (Dan Bell).

His initial inspiration came from listening to DJ Red Alert and Marley Marl mixing hip hop and soul on WBLX and Kiss FM in NYC in the early 80’s and hearing Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa and Tour De France by Kraftwerk. In addition, he was influenced by late 70’s and 80’s punk, dub and dancehall, reggae, funk, jazz, house, hardcore, jungle, techno, electro, ambient and d&b. In the early 90’s hearing DJs such as Master’s At Work, Todd Terry, Dj Pierre, Danny Tenaglia and Carl Craig propelled him to buy his first Technics and master the art of DJ’ing.

After years of playing in San Francisco, he started producing music, drawing on his training in drums/percussion and audio engineering. In the year 2000 he started hearing the first 2 step and UK garage music and fell in love with UK underground dance music which inspired him to blend past and present influences.

Recently Dub U has seen his collaboration with TRG released on Hotflush 2 Recordings and he remixed Baron Zen’s - “No More,” for Stones Throw Records with Tekbazer.

MRS JYNX - The Standoffish Cat, Planet Mu

Beautifully retrogressive and faithful IDM/Electronica from Manc producer Mrs Jynx aka Hannah Davidson with her debut album dutifully released through the home of IDM, Planet Mu.

The first thing you will notice about Mrs Jynx’s music is the remarkable similarity to classic works from Mike Paradinas, namely Tango ‘n Vectif, but taken as a compliment this means Mrs Jynx has tapped into a quintessentially English well of pastoral melodies and tripped harmonic structures that it’s really hard to not feel some affection for.

I could go on referencing a ruck of IDM and electronica producers but it seems futile because this is simply classic IDM of the highest order, if you’re into this stuff you’ll know exactly what to do.

‘The excitement surrounding Bucharest’s dubstep sensation TRG has been steadily growing with Mary Anne Hobbs championing his first release, Put You down/ Broken Heart on BBC Radio 1, followed by an enviable music press coverage in ATM, iDJ, Mixmag, Dummy, One Week To Live and support from the blogosphere.

Releasing later tracks on Hotflush, Hessle Audio, Subway, Immerse, Audio Freakz have put TRG firmly on the music map, with sonic excursions from dubbed-out minimal finesse to mutant garage revival to full-on breakbeat mayhem.
Says Pitchfork:”More evidence that swing is in the air comes from an unlikely location: Romanian producer TRG.

As new school dubstep wallows in mid-range distorted synths and energy through b-line modulation, this producer seems to have found a rich vein of form inspired by dubstep’s earliest years.”

Drawing from a range of influences that include Basic Channel, early jungle, dark garage, classic dancehall and wonky electro, TRG’s tracks and remixes by Martyn or 2562 have been rinsed by diverse DJs such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Tayo, Skream, Benga, Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Kode 9, DJ Flight, Bailey, Pinch, Distance, Appleblim.

The tunes have garnered praise from dubstep, minimal, techno to breakbeat and drumandbass scenes. His remix work includes interpretations for Tayo, Baobinga, Black Canvas to name a few. His collab with Benga and garage/ dnb don Zinc has been released on the influential Red Bull Music Academy Various Assets Compilation.

With appearances on the genre defining Dubstep Allstars mixed CD series on Tempa and a forthcoming single on the same label, as well as being included on mighty Soul Jazz Records’ Steppaz Delight compilation, TRG sets the mark for eclectic bass music in 2008.’

Immigrant Recordings

Subeena, 22, conventionally and bureaucratically Italian with Bulgarian violinist parents.

Before moving to London Subeena lived in Berlin.
Subeena is simply her first name spelled wrong, it’s not bass or sub related…

Subeena & Dot were both making tunes but didn’t know what exactly to do with them so they started their own label called Immigrant Recordings. Immigrant Recordings for obvious reasons.

Platform 1 is a nice small no budget night Subeena helps out with at Corsica Studios in Elephant and Castle - every second Thursday of the month.

Dot is from slovenia aged 22. Moved to london round 3 years ago, been making music for quite a while now.
Completely inspired by DMZ nights.
The majority of Dot’s music created from now on will be licensed by Creative Commons licenses.

Platform 1 is a non-profit night providing a platform for dubstep, grime, niche & all new underground music.

Up and coming djs and producers get a chance to play alongside known heavyweights and by keeping the entrance fee stupidly low (£4)

Platform 1 are about giving everyone a chance to experience the famous dubstep family vibes without the damage to the bank balance.

Corsica Studios also has a beautiful Funktion 1 Soundsystem and a covered outdoor smoking area!

Platform 1 is streamed live on www.streamizm.com
So if you want to check past sets or just can’t make it you can listen and view the whole night live or check these archives of past events!

Forensix(mcr)

Forensix (mcr) was turned on to the sound of dubstep through some mixes he picked up at the end of 2005; it was a sound that - to him- was very fresh and ultimately like nothing else he had heard.

With the aid of a decreped PC a copy of reason and a copy of cubase he started experimenting with making dubstep tunes, it wasnt long before his tunes started being played on Sub FM, Rinse & Breaks FM and with the support of the Velvet Muff Crew amongst others he signed 1st Dynasty to the primarily breaks label Revolution music.

With starting his label Covetous Records together with VMC member Bagelator and together with a full time job 2007 has not seen many new beats from Forensix (mcr)

2562 - Aerial, TECTONIC

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED ALBUMS OF THE YEAR BRINGING YOU 10 KILLER TRACKS FROM 2562 (ONLY FOUR OF THEM HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE BEFORE)!* Over a succession of rhythm melting vinyl releases for Tectonic, SubSolo and Philpot, Dave Huismans has asserted himself as the leading practitioner of forward thinking dancefloor motions currently in operation.

Under the’ Dogdaze, A Made Up Sound and his revered 2562 moniker Huismans has shocked the now merged techno and dubstep fraternities with a brilliantly consistent stream of bare bones riddims encompassing brittle 2-step, lurching techno and bass driven dub with a fractured brokenbeat aesthetic that sounds quite unlike anything else being produced today.

Aerial is Huismans’ massively anticipated debut album and contains some of the most deadly material produced under his 2562 guise, formed into a coherent statement of ten tracks set to detonate headphoness and Soundsystems around the world this summer.

This CD edition pulls together four tracks previously dispatched over the course of three individual 12″s released in the last year, plus six sparkling fresh productions primed to dub the world into submission. The set skanks into view with ‘Redux’ plumbing the depths of a breezing downtempo dub cut in the finest Rhythm & Sound styles, and clearing the airspace for the snaking syncopations of ‘Morvern’.

From here there’s a run of tracks culled from recent releases, ready to educate unblessed ears with some bass stepping sanctification, but the real treats for those who’ve been paying close attention come in the form of the stunning ‘Basin dub’ composed from delicate blue chords and a double-timed rhythmic intuition that couldn’t have come from anyone else, followed by the equally crushing ‘Greyscale’, realisng many a technoXdubstep nerd’s wet dream with a sacred stylistic blend of Burial, Basic Channel and T++ that leaves us floored.

Finally another new effort ‘The times’ signs off the album with some moody and expansive dub chords whipped into spectral plumes over a coma-slow riddim that brings us full circle and ready for repeat. This album follows in the massively revered tradition of dub experimentation and rhythm science laid down in the lineage stretching from Lee Perry through King Tubby, Scientist, Steve Gurley, Dillinja, Photek, Rhythm & Sound, Kode 9 and Burial, so all we can say is that if any of those names have remotely affected you in any way you really need to check this album out. Without doubt one of the albums of the year - absolutely mighty.

Bitesize Beats has been creating mixes for a number of years now, and has seen radio play from a variety of respected mix shows, such as ninja tune’s solid steel, the rinse on Xfm, and back to the basics (BTTB) in Germany. he comes very much from the cut + paste school of digital dj-ing, creating all mixes entirely in ableton live. never content to stick to a single style, previous bitesize beats mixes have taken in alt hip-hop, dubstep, electronica, ambient, soul, downtempo etc - often in the space of a single mix. ableton is used as a tool to cut up, re-arrange, re-edit and layer tracks to take them into new directions - vocal tracks blended with instrumentals, live tracks layered with electronics. the result is a smoothly blended journey of a mix, weaving together different genres and flowing seamlessly between tunes from start to finish.

FISK INDUSTRIES / MANDELBROT SET / VARIOUS - Magnetism, That Electricity, Highpoint Lowlife

A compilation release from the Highpoint Lowlife crew, featuring a cross section of new work from a number of artists on their roster. A four-part suite of works by Mandelbrot Set introduces the collection, finding particular success with the more chaotic aspects of their string ensemble drone, as on the Stars Of The Lid-like tranquillity of the first part or the drama and tumult of the third.

When drums enter into the equation it all gets a bit too ordinary, but it’s a very strong showing nonetheless. Fisk Industries might sound like a biochemical research facility, but their music takes on an acerbic, urban wasteland quality that has roots in dubstep and the darker side of elecronica, trying out some Burial-style rimshot sounds on ‘Crowley’. The Village Orchestra put all their eggs into a single twenty-minute basket.

The name of that metaphorical basket is ‘The King Of All Tears’ a wafer thin drone that sounds rather like holding a shell up to your ear on a deserted beach. Or so I imagine. I don’t think that’s something I’ve ever actually done. Finally, The Marcia Blaine School For Girls dispense some classy beat-driven IDM, characterised by unashamedly digital, chronically out of fashion post-Autechre beat narratives, produced with considerable accomplishment.

Wireman is the production name of Glasgow based producer Andrew Langfield.

Inspired by life, science fiction and electronic music of every genre Andrew’s Bass heavy productions are rooted in techno, infused with a dirty acid undercurrent and a love for deep, dubbed out sound-scapes.

On the foundations of solid grooves and glitched broken rhythms, Andrew forges a sound that encompasses harsh metallic textures and synthetic ambient drones all played over a backdrop of dusty circuitry, static, crackle and hum.

The future will see the continued development of this sound. Deep, bass heavy music that blur’s the lines between Techno, Dub-step and IDM.

Wireman has chosen tracksby artists whom he feels have influenced him into making music, artists whose music he loves and respects.
