This mix is made up of tracks all written in the last year and shows the more frenetic side of my music. I’m from a Techno and Electro background (Real Electro NOT Electro House Bo!!ocks!) but dubstep has totally opened up another level of syncopation for me so I’m really enjoying the ryhthmic freedom i have, (I’m also a Drummer) and of course the cavernous low end as always….

Alec Storey has been playing drums since he was 9. He started DJ’ing when he was 15 and started writing music on an atari 2 years later.

Alec studied Creative music technology at Bath Spa University from 2002 – 2005 – the same course as Appleblim, Gatekeeper and Wedge.

Alec had his first release in 2006 on Growth Recordings, with subsequent releases on Birminghams KracktroniK Records and Sweden’s Input Output Recordings as Well as remixes for Lukes Angers Bonus Round Records.

Al met Appleblim in spring 2008 and became interested in the Dubstep/ Techno crossover.

They collaborated on a remix of Hector & Bryants ‘Tension’ for Phonica records debut Vinyl release in spring 2009. In autumn 2009 he had his first release for Applepips Recordings and did a mix for Mary Anne Hobbs Radio 1 show. Al collaborated again with Appleblim on a remix of Planetary Assault Systems ‘X Speaks to X’ on Berlins Ost Gut Ton Records released in October 2009. Currently working on a number of solo projects with forthcoming releases on Apple Pips and Wedges new label ‘If symptoms persist’, he’s also working on a remix of Underworld with Appleblim for their forthcoming album due out in early 2010.

Deep tripping techy styles from Apple Pips with their second drop of the week. Al Tourettes hails from Bristol and follows in that rich heritage of electronically enhanced bass music, folowing the tech-stepping lineage from the Full Cycle crew or Tech Itch through to Peverelist and RSD with two intricately programmed and darkly tinted killers. ‘Dodgems’ on the A-side is more compatible for the dubstep crew with skittering 140bpm syncopations also belying an electro influence from the likes of Two Lone Swordsmen and Ae, while the flipside cuts into a tricky techno groove reminding of Kontext with a more driving intent. If you’ve checked any of Appleblim’s DJ sets recently you’ll have no doubt heard both these cuts rinsed out.

Kontext’s double drop of twelves on Immerse last year sent ripples of excitement through lovers of the techy end of dubstep, picking up massive fans in the form of T++, Peverelist and Appleblim to champion his ultra hi-tech and futurist sound. From his base in St Petersburg, Stanislav Sevostyanikhin has welded another stark and austere dubstepXtechno statement of intent on ‘Curved Convex Mirror’, using a similar palette of elasticated electronics and drawing rhythmic inspiration from 2562/AMS in the well sculpted subbass and fluctuating garage-rhythmic syncopations, but also a streamlined and rolling edge taken from the more European techno style of icy Russian electronics. One aspect was clearly apparent from those first two 12″s, that Kontext is a master of creating tense and dramatic sonic vistas, with ‘Hometown Swamp’ he sets a darkened scene with atmospheres reminiscent of the finest Chain Reaction tracks from Fluxion or Vainqueur before bringing them up to date with a powerful garage infected pressure sounding like TRG jamming with Pole. Absolute killer 12″ alert! One of our favourite Bristol bassed labels Immerse have dug up a couple of complete shockers from a name soon to be very familiar to many dubstep and Techno heads, Kontext. This is the first material we’ve heard from this fella and it’s quite easily some of the finest gear we’ve clapped lugs on this year, fusing the much loved tech styles of T++ with some proper Bristol bass science for two tracks that have totally ripped the head off it. ‘Falling to weightlessness’ introduces himself with a devastatingly minimal riddim constructed from pure bass pressure punctuated with skittering off-kilter percussion akin to Torsten Profrock’s finest moments, while the spectral synthline and deep electronica vibes could be cut from an Autechre side project (well, in our dreams maybe?). ‘Aeromonarchs attacks’ on the flip cuts into a much deeper rhythm, flexing some scarily toned bass muscle with a honed dancefloor intent that will politely ask any shit dancers to kindly step off the floor please. This is without a doubt the best thing to have emerged from Immerse and quite possibly one of the finest 12″s you’ll hear all year. Listen!

If you’ve managed to pick yourself off the floor after ingesting the first 12″ from Kontext, sit yourself down for a second and check the styles on this badboy. Not content with mastering the art of 140bpm dubstepXtech on the first 12″, Kontext turns his hand to two brutally bass laden techno cuts for the second installment. ‘Plumes’ sits heavy on the A-side with a purest subbass driven tech-house cut speckled with lush synthwork, but it’s the flipside track ‘Blinkende Stjerne’ that really takes the piss, charging up another divebombing subbass mission with dry funked and brittle techno percussion before introducing awesome Monolake style atmospherics of the highest calibre. It’s safe to say this an absolute essential, and fans of everyone from Peverelist to Villalobos need to give this some very close attention. Recommended!!!

Biography:

Born in Venezuela, now living in Barcelona, Luis Garbán is one of a swarm of talents rising up in zero-degree gravity spots around the world: blurring the lines between many genres in electronica as easily as he crosses geographical borders. Having released two  full length albums on Murder Channel and Peace Off , and with a slew of EPs under his belt on Shockout, True Tiger, Ad Noiseam, Lo Dubs, Spectraliquid,  and Hyperdub, it’s little wonder Fact Magazine named him as one of their producers to watch in ‘09.

Over the last couple of years Cardopusher has steadily developed his ultra intense edit style from Breakcore rhythms into a well diced form of dubstep with releases on Damage, Terminal Dusk and Redvolume and receiving a Quarta 330 remix on Hyperdub. Over the 4 original tracks from Cardopusher the man manages to cram in as many edits and DSP’d riddims as humanly possible, making fro a skilled but slightly claustrophobic take on the whole dubstep ting. Starkey picks out the best elements of ‘Knock yuh out’ for his remix, and places thumping industrial drums work into acres of reverberant warehouse space, while Atki2 places moody dub chords over his remix of ‘Keep on truckin’, lending some Bristol cool to Cardopusher’s frantic beatwork.

The clip of ‘Seraphic/8x’ is an old song, from 3 or 4 years ago. I don’t know that it will ever see a proper release, as my inspiration for that particular concept album has since subsided.

Term/Echo is actually from the upcoming album void(); and has been heard only by Paul from ‘Tympanik,’ so that’s pretty much a world premiere.

Not content with p*ssing all over the competition with a slew of scene defining records, Untold presents the primal-futurist swing of ‘Flexible’ on a 1-sided pressing for Brainmath. There’s no second guessing his productions at the moment, apart from the fact that they are guaranteed to mess up your dancefloor in brilliant style. ‘Flexible’ meshes the hype tension of the Wiley’s menacingly minimal Devil mixes with the sort of melodious thunk that Shackleton has locked down to programme a slyly experimental riddim made for DJs to screw into equally minimal gear or even find the right a capella to suit its itchy nature. Fans of Anstam, Joe, Ramadanman, and Roska gotta be quick with this one! Killer 12″.

**Blue Vinyl** Tense and tracky jams from Dubstep-dude-of-the-minute, Untold. Hessle Audio push the boat out with their latest release, pressing up two of their most experimental and tool-like cuts onto translucent blue vinyl to get the wax fiends hot. ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’ is Untold’s second drop for the label, improving on his previous 12″ with a sharper palette of sounds and a dedicated dancefloor vibe stripping back to pure bass, tension raising strings and clattering drum machine samples. Ther’s barely any trace of melody to this track, allowing for streamlined mixing potential with compatibly techy steppers riddims. ‘Anaconda’ on the flip is just as sparse, maintaining an economical sound using only thick subbass bumps, finely processed percussion and cartoonish bleeps to create a oddly abstract and inversely funky riddim. Sick twelve – especially the a-side…….

Look out for “F – Energy Distortion [UNTOLD Remix]” in early 2010 … early doors contender for remix of 2010

Decided to make a garage and 2-step influenced beats 2 yrs ago under the moniker The Solar Constant.

Mindset Recordings are yet to put a foot wrong and this latest 12″ from XxXy should position them as one of the UK’s finest dubtech imprints. XxXy may be better known to the dubstep community as Forensix Mcr but in his new guise he’s keenly focussed his energies on a pristine dubtech sound aiming for that school populated by F, Peverelist or Ghostleigh. A-side cut ‘Reflections’ is our favourite, keeping it simple with quick stepping rhythms driving the dance and given space with ever-expanding dub chords. Quick tip for the slow-house crew, play this on 33 and you’ve got a mean Workshop style slow groove! Flip over for two cuts heavily influenced by Dave Huismans, firstly ‘Constant’ snapping with 2562 styel percussion and and powerful subs, or the A Made Up Sound alike ‘Silken’ slipping in that niche between broken beats and dub-tech/house. Recommended!

Mindset Recording’s XXXY steps on the dubtech buttons with two lean and minimal riddims on Formant. ‘Science Fiction’ wears its Peverelist influences proudly with slick locking grooves and spacious techno-dub synthlines while ‘651′ adds some substance with dreamy chord sequences and submerged bongos.
