However 7 of those mixes finished with the same amount of votes, so I’ve made 16 mixes available over 4 shows.

One show per day running from News Year Day 2009 for 4 consecutive days. This’ll help the hangovers  ;)

Phaeleh (pronounced “fella”)

“The distinct sound of Phaeleh fuses the dark and heavy sounds of Dubstep and Drum and Bass with the melodies and soundscapes of Electronica, all sealed together with the subtle textures of acousmatic music.

A diverse range of influences results in an equally diverse musical output which can range from disturbing bass lines and heavy Dubstep/Jungle beats, perfect for the rave, to the more soulful, restrained tracks incorporating a variety of sound sources and vocal styles.

Phaeleh’s tunes have received a diverse range of support from DJs such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Smith (Smith and Mighty/RSD) and Rob Booth (Electronic Explorations), amongst others, and get regularly dropped across the globe, ripping up any party, regardless of location.

Phaeleh has also remixed tracks for artists such as Vaccine (Hotflush/Vaccine), Jinx in Dub (Supercharged/Bassrock) and Forensics (DubKraft/Digital Sin) and is a long time collaborator with Brighton-based vocalist Anneka and Leicester-based dub warrior, I-mitri.

In 2008 he started Urban Scrumping Records and continues to gig regularly across the UK…”

Mount Kimbie

HF021
Release date: 2nd February 2009
Mount Kimbie (12”)
A1: Maybes
A2: William
B1: Vertical
B2: Taps
Hotflush Recordings presents a brand new production duo that eludes classification:

Mount Kimbie. Based in London, they have developed a truly unique sound whose experimental rhythms lend themselves to the fringes of dubstep, wonky and hip hop, but ooze with emotion and echoing ambient soundscapes that take the listener to an entirely different place. Due for release in the beginning of 2009, this first release features four tracks which capture their evolving sound.

The minds behind Mount Kimbie, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos, both 22, met at university and began making music together in a home studio in Peckham. Hints of their influences from hip hop, jazz, dubstep and experimental electronica can be heard in their productions.

The EP has already been well received, with support DJs including Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 Experimental show (on which they also recently performed a guest mix), Scuba on his podcast for XLR8R, Rob Booth’s Electronic Explorations show, Ramadanman’s recent podcast mix for Dub War NYC, and Alex Incyde on Sub FM.

More information on Mount Kimbie can be found at http://www.myspace.com/mountkimbie

Raised on a diet of pure filth, the Broken Note duo bring their own unique sound to the electronic music scene. Combining lean, considered production skills with an appreciation of diverse rough beats; they have quickly established themselves as a sonic force to be reckoned with.

Some of their recent and forthcoming releases can only very loosely be described as Dubstep, with little in common with much of the scene’s output. Instead they draw from the Sino-Rastafarian sound and heavy bass; but also combine this with more of the kind of dark and aggressive beats that can be found in Breakcore and Jungle. Their Drum and Bass is similarly disturbingly brutal, with undulating beats and bass that are unashamed to draw from the darkly edgey sounds of Gabba and Techno. It delivers a rhythmic pounding that has set dance floors across Europe on fire with its astonishing heaviness. The result is both at home in clubs and the vast expanse of a decaying urban warehouse, inspiring visions of a dark and techy future for their music. A description of their most recent release was pegged as “The darkest, most frightening tunes that have ever found their way onto vinyl”. Imagine a combination of  Vex’d, Raiden and Rotator and you are probably half-way to understanding their sound.

Their live sets are currently based around two laptops running Ableton Live, utilizing various midi controllers and FX running with on the spot warping, cueing and live key work. The content tends to be a mash up of everything from dark dubstep to hard-techno, the most evil D’n’B to hardcore; playing many of their own tunes but mixing these with music by those who they draw inspiration from. They are both diverse and interesting, as well as being guaranteed to be one of the highlights of any night at which they are playing.

Broken Note is appreciated, played out and given radio airtime by the likes of Mary-Anne Hobbs, Amon Tobin, Boxcutter, Aaron Spectre, SPL, Babylon System, Cooh and Juno Reactor; their sound is being widely received around the globe.

One of Textura’s Top 10 labels of 2008
http://textura.org - Upcoming November issue.
—————–

Experimedia is a record label, arts organization, and online record shop based out of Ohio, United States which is involved in the digital and physical publication, promotion, and distribution of exploratory music and visual arts. The Experimedia catalog covers a broad stylistic palette of exploratory music including ambient, electronica, electro-acoustic, experimental, dance, sound-art, microsound, glitch, avant-garde, abstract, minimalist, and more.

Experimedia came into  existence initially as an Akron, Ohio based weekly experimental multi-media event during the summer of 2000, then one off events, then later evolved into a net label/community, more recently into physical releases, and most recently into a mail order record shop.  Experimedia is approaching its 50th netlabel release and 15th CD release.
The Experimedia online mailorder shop has recently expanded to include the availability of releases from other select labels and artists. This is intended to make more conveniently available some of the worlds most  innovative experimental music.

By including labels from overseas countries such as Japan, England, Germany, Austria, Australia, and more we intend to make more readily and conveniently available, music from around the globe within the United States.
Experimedia also acts as a community based platform for creative and conceptual media projects based upon collaborative research and project development efforts. The Experimedia Projects Wiki has been developed to facilitate the collaborative information gathering and organization for these research efforts.

The goal is that the Experimedia Projects Wiki will become a large resource of relevant information to the exploratory  sound and visual arts community as well as a historical account of the collaborative efforts involved with Experimedia related projects.

If you are an artists interested in contributing research data to our Projects Wiki or would like to initiate and curate a project within our framework please feel free to contact Experimedia for access and permissions.

PINCH - Underwater Dancehall, TECTONIC

Back in stock! *Comes with a second CD featuring the entire album in instrumental versions* Long anticipated by a dubstep community starved of full-length packages to sink their teeth into, “Underwater Dancehall” is the hugely ambitious debut album from Pinch, serendipitously unleashed onto the world on the same week as Burial’s towering second album “Untrue”.

Short of the generous use of vocals and innovative determination there’s little to connect these two albums - except perhaps for a skewed populist trajectory followed by both producers. The cd version of “Underwater Dancehall” comes as a double-disc package, delivering the entire tracklisting in vocal (Disc 1) and Instrumental (Disc 2) forms - and each disc is an entirely different beast.

Pinch’s astonishing “Qawaali” is re-branded here as “Brighter Day” and features vocal narration by New York MC Jukali, offsetting the emotive resonance of the original with a rugged vocal antithesis that takes a few listens to digest but which ultimately imbues the track with a context far removed from the spacious melancholy of the original (re-produced as the opening track on Disc 2). “Get Up” is next and is the first of two tracks featuring Yolanda on Vocal duties, shifting the agenda into a more giddy orbit that has more in common with the slick machinations of 2-step/R&B than with anything you could describe as dubstep, though the instrumental version reveals a much darker edge that seems to possess a filthier hub at its core. “One Blood, One Source” has already been aired on the limited 12″ album sampler and is the emotive heart of the album, engulfing Rudey Lee’s vocal with light-footed Sino melodies and a musically colloquial arrangement that does that clever thing of appealing to a broad spectrum of listener without letting go of its deviant soul.

Martin Clark has already made much of the link between Pinch and Bristol’s Wild Bunch/Massive Attack Continuum and as he rightly points out this is the track that most clearly joins those dots. “Gangstaz” sees the return of Jukali and is just immense - making a piercing emotional impact with the barest ingredients - something which for our money is Pinch’s greatest trait as a producer.

The album ends on the hugely impressive “Lazarus”, a complex arrangement of layered percussion and broad soundscaping, finishing proceedings off with an almost entirely instrumental sweep that makes use of stylistic self-restraint, a device that so many of Pinch’s peers could do with adopting. Across these 20 tracks Pinch has managed to balance out his broad musical ambition with a stylistic focus that imbues “Underwater Dancehall” with a narrative that makes it more than just a collection of 12″ tracks - and although there are moments when you feel the instrumental versions offer greater rewards, its nice to have the choice. Excellent stuff - Highly Recommended.

    “Grist”

    Crock013 co-released with Ad Noiseam

Grist“, the debut full-length by Drumcorps features 11 tracks of amen blast beats, guitar-wash-screams, and plenty of musical tension. Quick and decisive, “Grist” is quite possibly the definitive breakcore/grindcore hybrid album of its kind. Far from just a typical grindcore mash-up mix, producer Aaron Spectre plays many of the riffs and tweaks the source material to near impossible levels, all to make a passionate emotional attack on the listener. The intensity of his live shows has made him increasingly in demand, destroying parties from Tokyo to London. He’s at the top of his game, and “Grist” proves it.

This is the first collaboration between Cock RocK Disco and Ad Noiseam, two labels both respected for their quality releases. 12″ ep “Live and Regret” is already available by Cock Rock Disco, and the “Grist” LP version coming soon.
