MARLOW – Body Count / Once Upon A Time Called Now
Black Acre
12″ // £5.99
DUBSTEP / GRIME
Catalogue Number: ACRE003
Grumbling bastard dubstep from big hitter Marlow for Black Acre records. Title cut ‘Body Count’ comes from that same school of cinematic dubstep as Reso or Distance, placing emphasis on epic compositional elements married to sickening low end grinds and walloping halfsteppers beats for that perfect slow D’n'B effect that really gets the kids moving these days.
‘Once upon a time called now’ on the underside places more focus on the percussion, programming a bongo infected halfstep rollers riddim swinging it’s bassline like a brutal dubstep Gorilla with something to prove. Proper sci-fi dubstep business for all you dark buggers out there.
MARLOW – Dispute / Everyday (feat. Bongo Chily)
Contagious
12″ // £5.99
DUBSTEP / GRIME
Catalogue Number: CON015
Our favourite Manc dubstep imprint comes with the big goods this week from Marlow, previously known for releases on Storming productions, including the class split 12″ with Toastyboy. ‘Dispute’ is a technically accomplished floor rocker utilising an immediately recognisable string motif we won’t identify, to great mood setting effect. Expect to see some darkside screwfaces and lots of “ere, what’s that off?” type faces when this drops in the dance. Marlow hooks up with conscious MC Bongo Chilli on the flip with ‘everyday’, ramping up a midrange synthline driven stepper that’s garnered a lot of support from Skream, N-Type and everybody’s favourite dubstep queen Mary Anne-Hobbs.
MARLOW – Butterfish Remix / Machine
Hot Flush
12″ // £5.99
DUBSTEP / GRIME
Catalogue Number: SCUBA009
Latest Scuba bomb lands with us this week after the rather impressive disappearing act carried out by a white label version a couple of weeks back. Just to confuse matters further, the finished copies we have now are upfronts so once again it’d do you well not to sleep on this if you want a copy! The Marlow remix of “Butterfish” takes care of the A side here, and it’s a skanking, wobbly vocal session that’s just about as breezy as anything you’ll hear this summer, or whatever sad excuse for one we seem to be having on these shores this year. “Machine” on the flip does the, erm, obvious thing and samples some choral chanting before launching into another relentless blitzkrieg, Marlow styles. Limited upfront copies – Hurry!
MARLOW – Convoy / Scum
Black Acre
12″ // £5.99
DUBSTEP / GRIME
Catalogue Number: ACRE001
Debut release for the Black Acre imprint and the man behind the controls is Marlow, here delivering his most developed material to date. “Convoy” is a full-rounded beast, with typical gnarly menace and a constant, threatening low-end presence sitting alongside clever string samples and the odd crescendo. “Scum” on the flipside is more primal, deployed in skanking fashion with harsh stabs, one note melodies and a filthy aesthetic, delivered with all the bombast and puffed up production you’ll have hoped for. Limited copies.

Man, this week’s cast is dark, darkly dark – that’s not a complaint at all, out of darkness comes light.
Well done on the Marlow exclusive – he’s a favourite of mine ever since the incredible irv’s Marlow mix.
Loving these podcasts, thank you Rob.

As the Pipecock said, much darker. But real nice. Indeed, just as Marlow says the Dubstep sound is quite varied, which is something that makes it so exciting.
Another good job on the show Rob.
