CLUBROOT – Clubroot

DUBSTEP / GRIME / FUNKY
Released: Jun 2009
Catalogue Number: LODUBSD09002CD
Fans of Burial, take note.
Lo Dubs come correct this week with a hugely enticing and anticipated album from Clubroot. Clubroot has apparently been producing for the best part of the decade, initially constructing tech step D’n'B indebted to the likes of Nico, Ed Rush and Optical but shifting his palette to the dominant dubstep style in recent years.
To sum up Clubroots sound as succinctly as possible, it’s like the perfect hybrid of Burial and Kryptic Minds, taking the mood driven atmospheres and quicksilver slink of Burial and alloying it to dynamic basslines and intricately produced rhythm structures. This combination is explored through ten tracks united by a singular rhythmic vision in thrall to classic darkside dance music and operating under the cover of severely occluded atmospheres. With Mary-Anne Hobbs fully on his case and forums across the interweb quickly catching onto his sound it’s not going to be long before he’s soundtracking every channel four ident so make sure to get in early! Essential recommendation for fans of Burial!!!

what a tremendous show. Utmost respect to Rob for a flawless curation of material to bookend the Clubroot mix. As for the Clubroot mix itself, the new material couldn’t be more exciting to us, and I feel it also is assembled in a way that demonstrates his singularity, while showing some of the sounds in this realm on our culture.

July 7th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
ha! excellent stuff…much respect to Clubroot for expressing himself…if u allow me just one and only objection here: His music may have been influenced by other artists, but he remains unique as much as the artists he got influenced from…so there is no comparison, just Tunes.
Much respect to u Rob, for this kind, every week offer

Thank you Rob for yet another producer that I now have a heavy eye on. Mix was touching, dramatic, and melodic. Can’t help but think of Burial but I do agree Clubroot has a distinction that I can’t quite put my finger on. Well maybe if I listen to the mix again…

October 4th, 2009 at 2:38 am
This mix is exquisite. I have been listening to it on repeat since I downloaded it.

Since everybody seems to be commenting on this – I never saw any similarities between Burial and Clubroot before Rob mentioned it on this mix. After hearing that, I can see where people would pick that up, but for me listening to Clubroot’s self titled has a much more sweeping, epic feeling to it. For me Burial, despite the sparse often scattered feeling of the song, still has a much more focused emotion throughout the track which doesn’t change as much as Clubroot.

Maybe the best show yet along with the Surgeon show. That Burial remix of Jamie Woon is haunting brilliance, I can’t believe I missed this at the time as it’s now out of stock. Gutted
