Kidkut – Label boss
This mix is a showcase of some of the material coming on Immerse Records this year alongside some personal favourites of the moment. I like to play a mixture of this sort of tempo of music alongside house and garage, which I think is reflected in my own productions, Code Red being 140 but have an applepips thing coming thats 130 (seem to operating mainly around that tempo at the moment).  I know some people consider immerse to be a dubstep label, personally I just put out music.What gets released is a representation of what I’ve been into/playing/making six months previous, fortunately thats seems to resonate with a few people.

KONTEXT - Dissociate, IMMERSE

Dubstep and D’n'B producer Kontext makes good on the promise of his 12″s for Immerse with an album proper for the Bristolian label. ‘Dissociate’ is a vividly coherent collection, including six brand new tracks of solemn, Russian spirited electronics pressed a track per side for the optimum listening experience. The flurry of excitement over his early tracks is entirely justified for lovers of the darkest and techiest ends of the dubstep electronica spectrum, hatching atmospheric IDM with the electronic dub sphere of Pole and a minimized version of T++ or Martyn’s post-step flex. ‘Dissociate’ is ultimately a great headphone or armchair listen, the detailed production values intended for closer scrutiny, especially on the insectoid scuttle of ‘Clinch’ and the majestically synth-washed ‘Searching For The Transcendental’. But that’s not to negate the finely tuned technoid rhyth(m)otor that keeps his music cruising like a gangsta’s bimmer in the dance. If there was anyone from this end of the dubstep pool we’d expect to turn up an ace album, it’s Kontext and he’s surely proved the point here. Heavyweight darkness.

Dark and tuff breakstepping riddims from XI on the Bristolian Immerse imprint. ‘OOO’ exercises his darker side with loud and heavy percussion driven by blackened bass hits, while ‘Slippin’ ont he flip adds a certain Drexciyan melodic flair to electroid steppers programming. For fans of Marina Faib, Elemental or DZ.

The excellent Immerse imprint continues with its exploration of the deeper recesses of bass music with this inspired hookup between Hot Flush producer Sigha and Australia’s Spherix. “Separation” on the a-side untangles shimmering keys from a heaving mass of bass rumbles and aquatic percussion, bringing to mind elements of Claro Intelecto, Pole and Shackleton for a deep and heavy technofied variant. “Lesser People’ on the flipside is a lot steppier, making use of a similar sound palette under more propulsive percussive elements. Dark and atmospheric wares – recommended!

APPLEBLIM & GATEKEEPER - Hades / Tomb VIP, IMMERSE

Gatekeeper is among the most shadowy operators from the Bristol skool of steppers. His ‘Let Go’ 12″ for Punch Drunk is, in our opinion, an overlooked classic of the genre and his Skull Disco collab with Appleblim is a killer bit of work. He’s remixed that track here for Immerse records with a VIP version, adding an armour plating of breakstep modes to the original to run it into a far deadlier beast. On the flip his ‘Hades’ track takes the same toughened Breakstep route with spine knacking breaks and a stoically stilted flow to mix up with the likes of your Toasty or Gunjack tracks. Ace.
